 Irina's
talent was evident at a very young age. In juniors, in 1997, Irina
had a world ranking of Number 1 in doubles with partner Cara Black
and Number 7 in singles in 1997. She earned those positions, in
part, by winning the French Open and Wimbledon doubles titles and
reaching the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in singles.
Now
a full-fledged professional, Irina is considered one of the best
doubles players in the world, as well as one of the most improved
singles players. In 1999 and 2000, Irina claimed several doubles
titles (Scottsdale, Arizona; Birmingham, Alabama), and her consistent
top 50 doubles ranking made her a mainstay at all of the Grand
Slam events over that period.
If
1999 and 2000 were the years for Irina's doubles game to shine,
2001 has brought about the rejuvenation of her singles game. In
a three week stretch in April and May, Irina reached the finals
of ITF Allentown, Pennsylvania, and won $25,000
tournaments in Jackson, Mississippi and Dothan, Alabama. She also
won doubles titles at both events (Allentown and Jackson) she
entered in that span. With her recent success, Irina's ranking
should jump her into the top 150 in the world and if she continues
her current pace it won't be long until she finds herself at the
top of the women's
singles charts.
